People arrive having managed something serious alone for years — a marriage that ended a long time before it ended, a parent’s drinking, a childhood that was materially comfortable and emotionally unattended — because the environment offers no obvious permission to say it out loud. Affluence is not protective against trauma. It is quite good at hiding it.
