I started here. My first clinical work was with survivors of domestic violence in crisis in this city, and then with individuals who had acted harmfully toward their partners and families. Almost everything I understand about how relationships injure people, and about how people carry that afterwards, I learned in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia is a city of neighborhoods where people tend to stay, which produces a specific pattern in the therapy room: many of my clients are living within a few miles of the family they are trying to get some perspective on. That proximity is often genuinely good — and it means the work of separating what is yours from what was handed to you happens with the source still very much present, at Sunday dinner. That is a different task than doing it from a thousand miles away, and it deserves to be treated as one.

It is also a city with real and unevenly distributed hardship, and a long institutional memory of it. People here are frequently carrying things that were never framed as trauma because they were ordinary in the place they happened — a neighborhood in a hard decade, a household organized around someone’s drinking, violence that everyone knew about and no one named. Recognizing that as something worth working on, rather than as just how it was, is often the first piece of the work.

My sessions are held online rather than in person. For people in Northwest Philadelphia in particular — Mt. Airy, Germantown, Chestnut Hill, where I know the area well — that means the practical calculus of getting to an appointment across town on a weekday afternoon simply does not apply.
